Committed to sustainable palm oil
Our ambition is to make sustainable palm oil commonplace - which means working with partners and through our own supply chain to drive sustainable change.
Our Sustainable Palm Oil Policy sets out our commitment to 100% traceability for all the crude palm oil and derivatives that we buy and our target of achieving, by the end of 2019, 100% physically certified palm oil and its derivatives for our core volumes.
In Australia & New Zealand we’ve made strong progress on our journey to source 100% traceable and certified sustainable palm oil. Since March 2015, all the palm oil we buy directly for our locally made foods and refreshments has come from traceable, certified sources. Locally we also partnered with WWF Australia and Cool Australia to develop educational resources for teachers and students to learn about Certified Sustainable Palm Oil.
Building on our legacy of being a founding member of the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), in 2018 Unilever also became the first consumer goods company to publicly disclose the suppliers and mills we source from, both directly and indirectly. This marks a major milestone in our continued drive for a more sustainable palm oil industry.
Through this extensive mapping exercise – of over 1,400 mills and more than 300 direct suppliers – it’s clear that, despite the progress we have made as a company and as an industry, there are still serious environmental and social issues prevalent in the industry. This is a big step towards greater transparency, but we know there is more work to be done to achieve a truly sustainable palm oil industry and we will continue our efforts to make this a reality.
Our sustainable palm oil approach focuses on developing interventions that help support 25,000 farmers to help incentivise smallholders to adopt sustainable management and agricultural practices. This provides us with a major opportunity to improve practices and increase the visibility of our supply chain while supporting communities.
Tackling the complex social and environmental issues in the palm oil supply chain requires more than policy commitments – it requires the transformation of an industry. Through partnerships, advocacy, and committed work on the ground, we're helping to lead real progress towards our vision of a supply chain in which sustainable palm oil is commonplace.
